Pneuma: Of Spirituality in Contemporary Age

Artists: Dzaki Safaruan, ila, Fajrina Razak, Huijun Lu, Nhawfal Juma’at, Noor Iskandar.

Pneuma, an ancient Greek word which exemplifies the act of ‘breathing’ or in a religious context, the ‘spirit’ or ‘soul’. Spirituality, a primordial concept that is an embodiment of the human curiosity. Pneuma: Of Spirituality in Contemporary Age was an attempt on a visual symposium using art as a creative medium and the framework of an exhibition as a catalyst for further discourse while we are in the current state of global flux. Here, the global flux refers to the rapid advancement of our human convenience; a mundane flow of time that negates our much needed spiritual growth. Six artists were gathered to provide a multi-faceted view of an individual’s metaphysical perspective qua spiritual journey; a human effort to build a perennial ground as a basis for understanding differences and nuances.

Pneuma: Of Spirituality in Contemporary Age, a project commissioned for Singapore Art Week 2020, was an independent exhibition that I had co-curated with Nhawfal Juma’at, which ran from 11 January to 6 February 2020 at the Stamford Arts Centre. The exhibition space was activated with performances, artist talks and workshop.
