Deconstructing Batik
Wax resist technique on silk-viscose fabric (hung from the ceiling)
500 X 140 cm
2019

Deconstructing Batik is a manifesto of a sort. The text are the artist’s thoughts on Batik - questioning the association of Batik with ancestral identities, a contrast on batik as craft and art, and an investigation on originality of motifs found in native textiles. Referencing the pucuk rebung (bamboo shoot plant) motif, this work deconstruct the motif by absenting the plant from its triangular-shaped representation of a mountain, where mountains are considered sacred in the region, creating a new imagery and meaning in itself.
