Of Wax, Dyes and Labour

Artists: Aklili Zakaria, Lee Wan Xiang, Amirah Raudhah, Shane Ng, ALMOSTASTHMA, Yang Jie, Fajrina Razak

Batik in its entirety falls easily under the category of ‘craft’ due to its functionality and usage of the fabric. Of Wax, Dyes and Labour gathers the nonconventional of batik art-making while investigating the relationship between art and craft. The exhibition is a culmination of batik production by seven artists of different artistic disciplines and practices, taking the experimentations of the traditional art form to the next level of innovation, while paying homage to the medium that is considered obsolete and labour intensive in contemporary times.

Of Wax, Dyes and Labour, was a project independently organised and commissioned for Singapore Art Week 2019, which ran from 19 January to 9 February 2019 at the Malay Heritage Centre. The exhibition space was activated with performances, artist talks and workshops.
